About

C BARNABE

Most of the work is acrylic paint on archival paper. I’m interested in a flattened picture plane and a graphic enlargement and immediacy of line, pattern, shape and, especially, colour. The subject matter is abstract and geometric in nature. I often consider notions of intersection, collision and overlap, hoping to create dynamic compositions that encourage the eye to roam the surface of the painting.

The Large Scale Paintings

These paintings are an exploration of geometric patterning and loosely represent topographic landscapes of architectonic form. Avenues of colour are interwoven to build up layers that represent an illusionary space within the picture plane realized through the interplay of intersecting shadows. Painted black for visual emphasis, the shadows begin to establish random patterns that effectively flatten the picture plane. A dichotomy begins to unfold and a divergence of perspectives emerges: one asks the viewer to look into abstract space, while the other presents a flattened two dimensional interpretation.
